This one trial could change the course of life on earth.
Dear friends, | The Financial Times, May 31, 2023: "Earth past its safe limits for humans" The climate crisis is an "extinction-level" threat -- yet governments are gorging on fossil fuels. Most politicians won't live to see the world they create. Our children will. Now, in a historic court case, 21 youths are putting the US government on trial. The government has tried everything to block this case -- for eight years! But now decades of climate decisions will be examined in a court of law, where facts are facts, and the rest is perjury. The world's largest fossil fuel producer will be exposed for aggressively funding the biggest threat to life on Earth. The 21 youths are preparing right now -- and need global support. Our movement could fund the heart of their case, powering one of the largest evidence collections in history. We'd campaign to stop the government blocking this trial, and ensure global media coverage when the US administration is found guilty. This case will spark a landslide of lawsuits globally -- governments, beware!If we raise enough, we can also supercharge our other legal battles: to block a monster pipeline, and put all EU governments on trial, too. US President Biden just launched another attack to derail this court case. But these 21 youths will not be stopped -- we can make sure of it. From across the planet, let's fund the trial for life on Earth, donate what you can now: | | | | | | | | The climate crisis is the single biggest threat to life on our planet. But governments are still actively accelerating the inferno! Today's fires, floods, and famine are a bitter sip of the poisoned planet our children will inherit. Now the courts are emerging as a powerful tool to fight back. Millions fought to enshrine the rights to life and freedom in our countries' laws -- now let's use them! Armed with the scientific facts of climate breakdown, climate cases can force bold action. But first we have to win. So as these 21 youths take on the world's most powerful government, let's make sure they're backed by millions of us. If we raise enough, we could: - Help fund the very foundations of this historic case -- collecting every shred of damning evidence to prove the US government is willfully fuelling the climate crisis;
- Launch rapid-response campaigns to generate massive public support, and expose government efforts at stopping the trial;
- Provide financial and strategic support to other legal battles we're fighting, like stopping a mega oil pipeline in East Africa; and,
- Supercharge Avaaz campaigns to stop the destruction of our world.
21 youths are about to fight for the right to a liveable planet. They're fighting on behalf of our children, grandchildren, and their families. Let's back them to the hilt -- donate what you can now: | | | | | | | Children will disproportionately affected by global heating -- a tragedy they have no fault in or control over, especially in the Global South. Supporting bold new climate court cases is one of the most powerful ways to show younger generations that we care. So as we hurtle past the boundaries of a safe world, let's act with the urgency the climate crisis demands.
With endless hope and fierce determination,
Mike, Kaitlin, Adela, Camille, Bert, and the whole team at Avaaz
P.s. We send emails like this because they virtually guarantee our movement can have a direct impact in the world. We can't all be lawyers fighting for the planet -- but we can fund tenacious legal teams and powerful scientific research to help them win. Our small donations, pooled from across the planet, can radically alter the course of history. Funding these court cases could do just that.
