We just brought people power to the Americas' top human rights court!
| We just brought people power to the Americas' top human rights court! The judges are about to tell governments exactly what they need to do to protect us in this climate crisis, and Avaaz teamed up with the best lawyers to make our voices heard. But to secure climate justice we need to be LOUD, so let's leave a message now explaining how climate change is impacting us – and we will deliver them to the court! | | | Dear friends across the Americas, | Deadly heat waves, raging wildfires, and destructive floods – in a year of terrifying records, the fight for climate justice is more urgent than ever. And we just did something epic to bring it to the Americas' most important human rights court!
Avaaz partnered with some of the best international lawyers to file a powerful submission on climate change with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. It explains how climate anxiety is violating children's rights, and how Indigenous communities must be front and centre in the biggest environmental challenge of our time.
And now we need you.
There is no better movement than Avaaz to tell the court how climate change is impacting all of our lives. Take a moment to share some of your worries and hopes – and we will deliver our voices straight to the court in Costa Rica! | | | Just in 2023 so far, Canadian forest fires' smoke has suffocated cities as far away as Washington DC, heatwaves have scorched swathes of Latin America, and record rain has caused landslides killing dozens in Brazil. It's a catastrophe, and without urgent action it's only going to get worse. Governments and other polluters have had decades to take action against climate change – but they've failed us miserably over and over again. Here are a few messages already shared with Avaaz – let's make it thousands more:"Siento ansiedad climática a diario. Hago todo lo que creo poder hacer poniendo de mi parte pero estoy resignado. Siento depresión, pérdida del sentido de vida y poco interés en pensar a futuro. No planeo, no tengo sueños ya." – Ricardo León V.R., Colombia
"I feel incredibly overwhelmed by the hopelessness at times. I'm a young adult (23) and worry about what my future will look like, how harmful this will be to our collective society, and whether we will come close to addressing it. Then I feel frustrated and angry at all of the leaders who have failed us. [...]" – Alexa F., USA
"My memories of childhood are of abundance. In the old days it used to be easy enough to find monkeys, pacas and tinamou here to eat, but now our government has opened our lands to mine for gold and iron, and to produce timber for paper and soy and cattle. They call our peoples and our traditions primitive and show disdain for our ceremonies. Prioritizing development at any cost is not just poisoning Brazil — it is threatening our way of life." – Sonia Guajajara, Brazil's now-Minister of Indigenous Peoples Bringing people power inside the courtroom would not have been possible without funding from Avaaz members like you, and now we need to keep the momentum going. So please write about your experience now, and we'll make sure the judges read your powerful words: | | We are rallying behind climate litigation all across the globe – from the Americas to Europe and East Africa – to force governments and other polluters to stop setting our house on fire. We're running out of time, so we won't give up!
With hope and determination,
