Brazil is declaring war on the Amazon rainforest. A devastating new bill could soon be signed into law, giving loggers, miners, and industrial farms the green light for destruction. They could eat the Amazon alive. Avaaz is speaking to dozens of Indigenous communities across the rainforest. Their rights and their ability to defend the forest could be crushed by this new law -- they're furious and more determined than ever to fight back. So together we're launching a bold plan to help Indigenous communities reclaim their territories and regenerate vast areas of rainforest. Because the Amazon isn't just their home: the forest is family, and they are intricately woven into the rivers, birdsong, and the canopy above. This fundraiser will help Indigenous communities resist and fight back for the Amazon. Your support will enable communities to buy land and finally secure legal titles, giving them the power to stop the bulldozers and chainsaws. We'd also fuel legal battles and protests to halt the invasions, logging, and mining in their tracks. But we won't just defend the Amazon, we'll support families to regenerate the rainforest, too -- replanting thousands and thousands of native trees and breathing new life into ancient forest gardens. The Amazon rainforest is the richest, most colourful display of life on Earth, from two-toed sloths to pink river dolphins and translucent tree frogs. But it is being strangled. And while we can't all block the bulldozers or tie ourselves to the trees, we can support the guardians who've protected it for centuries. Let's help Indigenous communities stand firm and defend the Amazon rainforest. Please donate what you can now:
| Dear friends, | | Brazil is declaring war on the Amazon rainforest.
Let's help Indigenous communities stand firm and defend the Amazon rainforest. Please donate what you can now: | | | | | | | | | | | | Indigenous communities are already facing a life or death situation in the Amazon. Rivers are being poisoned by oil spills and choked with mercury from illegal mining -- and children are sick and dying. Leaders are being attacked and murdered for speaking up against illegal invasions. Now this new law could open the floodgates of destruction, emboldening other Amazon countries to roll back protections and crack the rainforest open for 'development'. Today some parts of the forest are disappearing so fast that communities can't keep up. They need our support to go on protecting the rainforest, and if we raise enough we could: - Enable Indigenous Peoples to secure legal rights to their ancestral lands -- campaigning for land demarcation in Brazil and funding land purchases in Colombia and beyond;
- Restore up to 6,000 hectares of rainforest -- supporting Indigenous families to replant vast areas of critical habitat, and laying the groundwork to scale this model across the Amazon basin;
- Fight the far-right politics that is erasing the rights of Indigenous Peoples -- advocating with policymakers for change across the Amazon Basin, fighting injustice through media work, and pushing to expand Indigenous land rights in Brazil ahead of a global climate summit this year;
- Map Indigenous lands and expose threats to the forest -- funding detailed mapping of land conflicts, deforestation, and illegal mining, which could provide critical evidence to stop the Amazon's destruction;
- Set aside funding reserves for urgent campaigning in the Amazon -- fuelling rapid-response actions, legal defences, and mass mobilisations to fight for the rainforest and all the life it holds.
For the sake of the Amazon and its protectors, please donate what you can now: | | | | | | | | | | | Our movement has always stood with the Amazon's Indigenous Peoples. We've helped stop new oil drilling in Ecuador, funded 24/7 security for Indigenous leaders facing violence and assassination, and flooded crucial global summits with powerful Indigenous voices. They see us as allies. We cannot let them down now. With fierce hope and endless determination for life on Earth, Jon, Camille, Laura, Bert and the whole team at Avaaz 🌱🌳🌿 Why Your Support is Critical - The Amazon is at a Tipping Point: Scientists warn that if much more of the rainforest is lost, it could turn into dry savanna -- as we're already seeing in parts of Brazil and Bolivia.
- Proven Protectors: Studies show that where Indigenous communities hold rights to their lands, the forest is healthier and more intact than anywhere else.
- David vs. Goliath: But while Indigenous Peoples have the heart and knowledge to defend the rainforest, they're up against the vast wealth and power of politicians, agribusiness, mining, oil, and logging corporations. That's why they're calling for our support.
- Global Stakes: What happens to the Amazon will affect us all, wherever we live. Protecting the planet's most precious rainforest is truly a battle for the future of life on Earth.
Indigenous communities are crying out for our solidarity. With our support, they could stand their ground, defend their lands, and help to keep the Amazon thriving. - 🍃 - | | | | | | |
