I'm writing again because we have one final chance to stop one of the worst oil pipelines on the planet. It is truly monstrous. Snaking through Uganda and Tanzania, it will tear through some of the planet's most wondrous ecosystems, carving up elephant sanctuaries, protected forests, and more than 200 rivers. It's as if it was designed for maximum destruction. Thousands of families are losing their homes to make way for this massive pipeline. And as our world is slammed by the floods and fires of climate breakdown, it could pump a quarter million barrels of oil every single day. Wherever you are on Earth, this is an urgent call to action. One of the UK's top law firms is preparing to take the owners of the pipeline to court. Legal experts believe there's a real chance of stopping the pipeline outright -- but we have to launch the case now, before construction is completed. You've generously donated to Avaaz before -- thank you. I really hope you'll consider making a donation today. Because here's the hard truth: everything is ready, but no major funder has stepped forward. Environmental groups are stretched thin, their budgets slashed, unable to take on a major court battle. Avaaz members are basically the last hope. If enough of us chip in, we can provide the seed funding to launch the case immediately. We'd also support families fighting eviction and power Avaaz campaigns to protect life on Earth. This is our last chance. We may not get another one like it. Please donate what you can now:
| Dear Dany, | | I'm writing again because we have one final chance to stop one of the worst oil pipelines on the planet.
Please donate what you can now: | | | | | | | | | | | | Thousands of families are being evicted to make way for this monster pipeline in East Africa. Security forces are beating and arresting people for speaking out. This court case is the last credible route to saving their homes and protecting some of the planet's most precious ecosystems. At a time when global politics feels increasingly chaotic, it can be hard to believe real change is still possible. International agreements are being ripped up, wars dominate the headlines, and powerful interests keep pushing new fossil fuel projects forward. But this fight is different. By funding this lawsuit, we have the opportunity to land a decisive blow against one of the most destructive oil projects on the planet.
With help from Avaaz members, communities in East Africa have already fought this project through regional courts -- but their case was dismissed on a technicality. This new lawsuit in the UK is the last remaining path to stopping this monster pipeline. Legal experts believe it offers a far better shot at a fair, independent hearing -- with a real possibility of success. If we raise enough, we could:
- Help fund a groundbreaking court case in the UK to stop the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, exposing the environmental abuses and climate devastation that this project will cause;
- Stage an epic media stunt around the launch of the court case, increasing pressure on insurance companies to walk away from the project;
- Support families in Uganda and Tanzania who are fighting their evictions, providing cash assistance for food, medicine and other basic necessities;
- Fuel Avaaz campaigns to defend land rights alongside Indigenous and frontline communities, and continue the fight to protect life on Earth.
Everything Avaaz does is entirely funded by people like you. We are counting on your donation to help launch this court case immediately. Please give what you can now. | | | | | | | | | | | With endless hope and determination, Kaitlin, Laure, Bieta, Pascal, Mike, and the whole team at Avaaz More information about the court case:- Who's bringing the case: The lawsuit is being prepared by Leigh Day, one of the UK's leading environmental and human rights law firms. They are working closely with Ugandan lawyers and affected communities.
- Why this case is in the UK: Although the East African Crude Oil Pipeline is being built in Uganda and Tanzania, the company that owns and runs it is registered in the UK, which means it can be challenged in UK courts.
- Why this matters: Legal experts believe bringing the case in the UK gives a far better chance of a fair, independent hearing -- and a real opportunity to use environmental and human rights law to stop the pipeline.
- What the case could achieve: The pipeline could be halted outright, and communities whose land and livelihoods will be impacted by this project could get the justice and compensation they deserve.
- Why your support is critical, right now: We have a short window of time to help launch this case before construction is complete -- making this a rare opportunity for each of us to take a direct stand against one of the most destructive pipelines on Earth.
