Life-saving work is protected under international law. Yet Israel has ignored this basic principle during the assault on Gaza: not only murdering tens of thousands of women and children but also decimating hospitals, bombing ambulances and killing more than 1500 health workers.
Like Dr Hussam Abu Safiya — who served as director of the last functioning hospital in North Gaza until it was raided — about 90 medical professionals remain imprisoned in Israel, many abducted on duty from hospitals and ambulances in Palestine.
